25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
Dear brothers and sisters, peace be with you. Today, we continue to delve into the scripture mentioned yesterday, which tells the story of a woman suffering from a hemorrhage who was healed. This story unfolds as Jesus is on his way to heal a girl who has just been raised from the dead, and along the way encounters this woman with the issue of blood.
The issue of blood refers to the condition where a woman experiences continuous bleeding during her monthly menstrual cycle. This was considered an impure condition under the law, and for Jewish women of that time, it was a profoundly serious situation. It rendered them ceremonially unclean, unable to participate in social activities, attend synagogue services, or engage in fellowship. Thus, they suffered not only physically but also socially, becoming isolated and lonely.
This woman had spent twelve years and all her savings trying to cure her condition, but "she was not at all better." Perhaps she had a marriage that broke because of it? Maybe her family gradually distanced themselves due to her illness? As the saying goes, in sickness, filial piety is absent, even the closest relationships like those between parents and children could be strained due to prolonged illness, let alone this woman who had been socially cut off for twelve years due to her impurity.
During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many people experienced the unbearable pain of isolation. I myself have been quarantined in a hotel once, with my wife and children. Having everything provided for, staying in a four-star hotel seemed comfortable, but the feeling of being isolated was truly intolerable. It felt like friends had distanced themselves from you, as if you had become a detestable presence. This social isolation is extremely severe and painful.
How could this woman, afflicted with such a condition, openly seek healing from Jesus before everyone? Clearly, she couldn't. She was in distress but had a glimmer of hope yet couldn't bring herself to ask for help. When we understand a bit of the pain in this woman's heart, we can better appreciate her audacious act of wanting to give everything. She pushed through the crowd, amidst the surrounding throng, just to touch her only hope. When she touched Jesus, a miracle happened—her bleeding immediately stopped, and she felt the power of healing.
If this woman had disappeared at this point, if the story had ended here, perhaps there wouldn't be this account. But it's at this moment that the most spectacular part unfolds.
Jesus felt power go out from him, and he spoke, asking who had touched him. Moreover, he kept searching for the one who had touched him in the crowd.
The woman who had just experienced the joy of healing was plunged into fear again. It's important to note that according to the law at the time, her actions made Jesus impure as well. She thought Jesus might turn and rebuke her, or even worse, she might face the wrath of the crowd. This woman, who had experienced twelve years of social isolation, must have been in a state of extreme confusion and vulnerability.
But Jesus' response was beyond everyone's expectations. Especially beyond the woman's.
Jesus gently said, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." Jesus knew her physical ailment had been healed, but he also saw the fear, the insecurity, and the years of suffering and sorrow that remained unhealed in her heart. God's healing goes beyond the body; it completely heals the heart, body, and soul. God wanted her to know clearly that she was now a completely normal woman who could return to society. She didn't steal any grace; God healed her openly. Jesus wanted everyone to see that this woman was healed, completely healed.
Perhaps we've all been through a long period of difficulty or illness. Perhaps it brought you great pain and anguish, and worried your family or friends. Remember this woman with the issue of blood. Twelve years of illness is a great pain. It's like an endless darkness, an endless treatment. But Jesus will still heal you today. He hasn't forgotten you.
We see that Jesus' saving work is not without reason; he paid a great price, genuinely giving himself for those around him. He wasn't just about verbal or intellectual love; he touched people with his entire being, heart, and soul. Therefore, as ministers, as Christians, if we're not prepared to give everything, including our lives, time, and experiences, our work will not achieve anything. If we only love people verbally or intellectually, we cannot lead a life that moves hearts. So, we should emulate Jesus, giving our sincere effort and following his example.
These two stories are incredibly fascinating; may we all reflect on and listen to them more. When people reach the end, God's work is about to begin. Thank you all, and I look forward to continuing to listen to the story of chapter six tomorrow.
