Paul in Ephesus

1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”

“John’s baptism,” they replied.

4Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.

8Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

11God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

13Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

17When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. 20In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

Dear brothers and sisters, peace be with you. Next, we will be reading Acts 19, which describes the events that took place in Ephesus. Ephesus was a very important provincial capital and a major trading center in the Roman Empire. It was known as the marketplace of Asia Minor, with river basins and land trade routes. Therefore, it was a significant city, second only to Rome, and a prosperous metropolitan area in Central Asia.

However, Ephesus was also a very complex place. In addition to its extensive trade, it also had the great Temple of Artemis. The Temple of Artemis, known in Greek mythology as Diana, with Artemis being the Greek name and Diana the Latin name, was an incredibly grand structure. It was the most important building in Ephesus, even more significant than the government buildings of the time. Many people came here seeking various things, one of the famous items being the Ephesian letters, which were akin to the talismans or amulets people seek in temples today.

Moreover, the Temple of Artemis was also a place of great sin because it held the right of asylum. Many criminals could find safety by reaching the temple, and the government would therefore not disturb the sanctuary. This turned the so-called holy place into a refuge for criminals, rather than a religious sanctuary.

The Temple of Artemis was one of the most important buildings in Ephesus and supported many workers. In the latter part of Acts 19, we see that many people benefited from the religious activities there. They provided religious artifacts or various related items, meaning this temple supported many people's livelihoods. It was a vast economic entity, similar to some of the large temples or religious groups we know today, which operate like major corporations.

In these twenty verses, there are many interesting stories. First, we see Paul arriving in Ephesus and meeting some disciples. He asked them about the Holy Spirit, and they said, "No, we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" They replied, "John's baptism."

Here, an important concept is emphasized by Luke: the distinction between the law and the gospel. John's baptism was one of repentance, which required a contrite heart. In the Old Testament, people were justified by the law, but we know that the law cannot justify anyone because no one can fully meet its requirements.

So, Paul preached the complete gospel to them, telling them, "John's baptism was to prepare the way for the one who was to come, that is, Jesus. Jesus is the true Savior, and the gospel is the key to justification." When Paul baptized them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they received the full status of being justified. Therefore, in understanding the concept of law and gospel, we must be very attentive. Our emphasis should be on the gospel. The law makes people aware of sin, but the gospel is what brings forgiveness and justification.

God also granted Paul great power here, to the extent that even handkerchiefs and aprons that touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured, and evil spirits left them. Thus, God empowered Paul to preach the gospel with great effectiveness and perform miracles, spreading the word of the Lord throughout the region, even to all of Asia.

Between verses 13 and 17, there is an interesting story. Some individuals, possibly superstitious elements within the local religion, tried to use Jesus' name, saying, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?" These people wanted to cast out demons using Jesus' name, but they did not believe in or belong to this faith.

At that moment, their identity as fake exorcists was revealed, and they ended up being attacked by the evil spirit. We must understand that Jesus' name is not something to be used frivolously but is to be believed in and worshipped. We cannot treat Jesus' name as a mere talisman like in folk superstition.

We see that Paul’s preaching of the gospel led to the Lord’s name being held in high honor, and there was a rise in Christian faith. Many people who practiced sorcery and followed false beliefs came forward, confessed their practices, repented, and burned their books, which included valuable scrolls and texts for divination and astrology.

The value of these burned scrolls was fifty thousand drachmas, a considerable amount of money. Considering that an ordinary worker’s daily wage was about one drachma, fifty thousand drachmas would equal almost a hundred years' worth of wages, a significant sum of money.

We see that these people, who originally worshipped false gods and practiced sorcery, were willing to repent and return to God. They decided to destroy the books they once relied on for their livelihoods. This act showed that they truly saw the value of the gospel and were no longer bound by worldly and earthly things. They did not sell the books to make money because they understood that completely destroying these books and eradicating the false beliefs was crucial to their faith in the gospel. Their repentance was truly admirable, demonstrating their commitment and adherence to the gospel.

Paul stayed in Ephesus for three years, greatly advancing the gospel, building the church, and leading many to repentance and faith in the Lord. But is this the whole story? Tomorrow we will continue with the second half of chapter 19, as Paul’s preaching increasingly reached more people, affecting the craftsmen of the Temple of Artemis and causing a significant uproar. We will discuss this further tomorrow. Thank you for listening.
