A Prophet Without Honor

1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.

2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?

3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”

5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Today we are going to share the story of the "Unhonored Prophet" as recorded in Mark 6:1-6. This passage actually portrays a profound story of human nature. Let's take a closer look at this process.

When Jesus returned to his hometown, his disciples followed him. At that time, the villagers, from small to large, who had watched him grow up were amazed and said, "Where did this man get these things? What is this wisdom that has been given him? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?"

Before Jesus left his hometown at the age of thirty to preach, his profession was that of a carpenter. In that era, "carpenter" was a generic term, meaning he might have crafted furniture, built houses, repaired doors and windows, or engaged in various other tasks. Therefore, to the people around him, he was just a worker, an ordinary person of the working class. Because the villagers had watched him grow up, Jesus was just a familiar neighborhood boy to them, nothing extraordinary. To their surprise, after Jesus left and returned, he had become a "rabbi" with disciples. For these people, he was no longer the person they had known since childhood. They originally thought of him as just an ordinary worker, but now he had become someone like a teacher. Many couldn't accept this change. In verse three, they even mentioned that they were offended by him. It can be imagined that when Jesus returned home this time, it was not a triumphant return, but rather met with various doubts and aversions.

This once again demonstrates the prejudice and pride in human nature. We often judge people's present based on their past, as if someone who was not good in the past will not be good today or in the future. Jesus, once a carpenter and an ordinary person, was the son of God. Yet, he did not choose to be born into a wealthy family or one with great power and influence. Instead, he chose the most ordinary place, the humblest of homes. However, people judged him based on his appearance, saying, "Isn’t this the carpenter? Don’t we know his family? What makes him so special?"

When a person is unwilling to be healed, they cannot be healed. When a person refuses to listen, they are no different from a deaf person. When a person gives up hope and abandons the thirst for truth, they cannot hear the truth because their hearts are closed. It is they who choose not to accept the truth, even if the truth is standing right in front of them. Hope is such an important thing. Having hope allows one to eagerly anticipate and thirst for the truth, which is the most important thing for a person.

In a family, harmony and love are absolutely important. If a family lacks these elements, even if it is wealthy, powerful, or enjoys all material comforts, there will still be a negative atmosphere within the family.

For an organization, morale is crucial. If all members are full of hope and expectation for the organization, even in the face of external challenges and unfavorable conditions, the organization still has tremendous potential. Because when people have hope, they will go all out, and this mindset is the most powerful motivation.

For a country, if the people have a bright hope and expectation for the future, even if the country is currently in poverty or has just experienced the pain of war, it can rejuvenate with vitality. Because when people have hope, external challenges are no longer insurmountable obstacles. Looking back at history, after the end of a war, despite the massive destruction, countries have prospered again because people have hope for peace and rebuilding. However, in times of peace, if people lose hope in the current government or country, that is the real difficulty.

Therefore, we must deeply understand the immense grace and significant mission that Christianity brings. What we possess is not just a set of moral teachings, but the hope of redemption, the hope of this life, and the hope of eternity, the message from God, allowing more people to hear and convey the good news of salvation, giving them the message of hope. Everyone can choose to be a messenger of this message or choose to ignore it. When we realize the value of this hope, we understand that this is a message that changes the world.

Next, the story is about Jesus sending out the Twelve Apostles. This is a good example. Jesus showed how to spread the Gospel and then let the Twelve Apostles begin to take practical action. This story teaches us many valuable lessons. Thank you for listening, and we will continue to share the next story.
