Peter Explains His Actions

The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’

“I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’

“The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.

“Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’

“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”

When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today, we are reading the first half of Acts Chapter 11. We see that Luke painstakingly records the story of the salvation of the Gentiles once again. It is important to note that in those times, writing a book was very costly. Whether it was ink or writing materials, it was not as simple to obtain as it is today. So why did Luke devote such a large portion of his writing to this event again? This indicates the importance and significance of this event in the New Testament.

First, let's look at Peter explaining to the Jews. He is not defending or trying to justify his actions but simply stating a fact: the Holy Spirit truly led him to the Gentiles, and he witnessed the Holy Spirit coming down on these uncircumcised, non-Jewish people. As we mentioned two days ago, for Jews, associating with Gentiles and those who are not circumcised was a major taboo. It was something they could not accept. Peter explains that we do not have the right to define God's actions. If God wants the Gentiles to be saved, then the Gentiles will be saved. The gospel is meant for all nations and peoples of the world, so we cannot hinder God. We are simply stating a fact.

Similarly, he mentioned that he brought six brothers with him, making a total of seven people. This is a very important proof and state of witnesses. If it were only him, it might be hard to explain and convince others. But it was not just him; there were six other people. Seven people saw and experienced this event. This makes it a fact both in terms of law and legality. With so many witnesses telling the same story, it would hold up even in a court of law.

Therefore, for Luke, who was a Gentile, this was a historic milestone. The gospel spread from the Jews to a broad range of Gentiles, defining the mission to the Gentiles. For the Jews, this was unimaginable, but for the Gentiles, it marked the beginning of the gospel reaching all nations. God's intent in Jesus Christ's resurrection is revealed—salvation for all nations and peoples, no longer confined to a specific ethnic group or region. Anyone who hears the gospel has the chance to be saved. This is truly a monumental event in church history!

We also remember Jesus’ initial command: "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Now we see that they have started spreading the gospel in Judea. Initially, the Jerusalem church was established with three thousand believers, then it spread to Samaria, sharing with the so-called half-Jews. Now in Judea, the gospel is starting to reach complete Gentiles, just as Philip shared the gospel with the Ethiopian eunuch, and now Peter with the Roman officer.

This highlights an important principle for church establishment. The gospel movement of the church transitions from being passive to active, from waiting to outreach. So, we see that the expansion of the church is not just about people coming to listen, but the church must actively go out. When we follow the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will lead us out of the church rather than waiting for people to come in. This is a critical concept. Throughout history, churches that grow are those that actively go out to evangelize, not those that wait inside the church for people to come.

Thank God, we see Gentiles being saved, and we see Peter and many Jews beginning to understand and repent, realizing that God's intention is for all nations and peoples to be saved, not just the Jews. They began to change, and this idea started to be accepted among the Jews. Although some Jews still do not understand or accept it, we see that God's work is not hindered by anyone. Tomorrow we will see more exciting stories in the second half of Chapter 11, from the church in Antioch. Thank you for listening.
