Peace to you all. Today’s message covers chapters 12, 13, and 14 of the Gospel of Luke.I want to bring together these three chapters, as they all relate to the cost of being a disciple. Together, they give us a complete picture of what it truly means — and what it costs — to follow Jesus.

Let’s start with chapter 12:

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When you are brought before synagogues, rulers, and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” (Luke 12:8–12)

We also see in chapter 12 the parable of the watchful servants, and then in chapter 13, Jesus speaks about entering through the narrow door.

Finally, chapter 14 speaks very directly about the cost of discipleship, ending with a short but very profound statement about salt losing its saltiness.

When we look at these three passages together, we can form a clear picture of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

1. Discipleship is a lifetime commitment

In Luke 12:35, Jesus speaks of the servants who wait for their master’s return. In today’s world, we might not fully grasp what it means to "wait for the master’s return."But think about your workplace: when your boss gives you a task, you’re expected to complete it, not slack off. That’s just basic responsibility. In the same way, you expect those who work for you or help you to be diligent and focused.

It’s the same in our faith.During a powerful worship night, a moving sermon, or a touching revival meeting, it’s easy to say,"Lord, I want to serve You for the rest of my life!"But the hard part isn’t that moment of commitment;the hard part is the daily consistency that follows — every day, in small, seemingly insignificant actions.Daily devotion, daily Bible reading, daily preparation of your heart — these may seem ordinary, even boring at times, but faithfulness in small things is the true mark of a disciple.

It’s like every January at the gym: it’s packed with people who have made New Year’s resolutions:"I’m going to lose weight!""I’m going to get stronger!""I’m finally going to reach my goals!"But by mid-January, half of them are gone. Life gets in the way.

Spiritual life is exactly the same.Discipleship is not about short-term passion; it’s about long-term, daily commitment. It’s sticking with those small, repetitive, sometimes dull tasks, and being faithful, even when you don’t see immediate results.

Let’s remind one another: being faithful in the small things is a big thing in God’s eyes.Because God honors and entrusts more to those who are faithful in little.

2. You will be misunderstood by those you love

Jesus said that family members would turn against each other. He was not encouraging conflict — He was simply stating a reality. When your values change because of your faith in Jesus, those who don’t yet understand will misunderstand you. Sometimes their misunderstanding will feel like attack or rejection.

As parents, one of the hardest things we face is being misunderstood by our children — especially during their teenage years.Teenagers begin to think for themselves and express opinions, but they often do so in immature and impulsive ways.As parents, it’s hard not to think, “Why are you so immature? Why don’t you understand?”But we can’t simply give them our life experience in one package. We have to walk alongside them, be patient, and wait until one day, when they grow up and face challenges themselves, they will finally understand.

It’s the same for Christians facing unbelieving family members.Their opposition or criticism is not necessarily because they hate you,but because they cannot understand the faith and purpose behind your actions. They may think you are foolish for spending so much time at church, for doing things that seem "pointless" to them.

But we know — this is part of the cost of discipleship.Jesus came into this world, loved those He came for, even gave His life for them — and yet, many did not understand or accept Him.

This is the greatness of God and a key lesson for us as disciples:we cannot expect everyone to understand, but we can choose to be patient, loving, and Christlike in our responses, believing that one day, they will see and understand.

3. Being a church member is not the same as being a disciple

Luke 14:25 says, “Large crowds were traveling with Jesus…”Most pastors would be thrilled to see a large crowd at church!A bustling, lively church is something we all enjoy.

But Jesus, at that moment, didn’t sugarcoat anything. He said,"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters — yes, even their own life — such a person cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:26)"And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:27)

Jesus wasn’t interested in numbers. He knew that some people followed Him for free food, some for healing, some for the excitement of miracles, and others simply because of the crowd.

Today, how many people attend church just because of the programs, the activities, or the social circle? But discipleship is different. It means loving Jesus above all — even above family, even above your own life. That’s a high standard!

And not only that — He calls us to carry our own cross and follow Him.Jesus carried the weight of sin, betrayal, rejection, sweat, and blood on His cross. We are each called to carry a much smaller cross, but still a cross — a daily commitment to live in response to His love and sacrifice.

Being a member of a church, showing up on Sunday, and looking after your spiritual life is just the starting point.A disciple goes beyond that — willing to put in the effort, make sacrifices, and live out that calling.

The church should be a place of welcome and love for everyone. But for believers, becoming a disciple requires commitment and growth. It’s a process — everyone’s pace is different, and we don’t need to pressure one another.Jesus gives us grace and opportunities to grow — just like Peter, who denied Him; Mark, who ran away during ministry; and Paul, who once persecuted the church.God’s mercy is abundant.Let’s reflect on our own lives, and ask: are we living as disciples, or merely as churchgoers?

4. Learn to discern the right timing

In Luke 12, Jesus teaches us to discern the times, to weigh what is right, and to count the cost. Some might think that calculating costs means a lack of faith. But that’s not true — God gave us both faith and wisdom.

He wants us to trust Him for big things, but also to plan wisely, to understand the times, and to manage the resources He has entrusted to us.

Sometimes people ask, “Why hasn’t God given us more resources or more people?”The answer lies in the parable of the talents — the servants given 5, 2, and 1 talent.God owns everything. He lacks nothing. The real question is: “If God gave us more right now, could we handle it?”

Are we like the servant with 5 talents, ready to invest, build, and do even more, proving we can be entrusted with greater things?Or are we like the servant with 1 talent, who buried it in fear and wasted the opportunity?

Calculating costs doesn’t mean doubting God — it means honoring the wisdom He’s given us.Planning doesn’t mean we lack faith — it means being good stewards. If we are faithful in small things, He will entrust us with bigger things.

Lastly, I know some of you may be thinking:

"Being a disciple sounds exhausting! Can I just be an ordinary Christian?"

The truth is — when you decided to follow Jesus, you already made that choice. In Matthew and Luke, Jesus clearly says:"You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world."He doesn’t say, “You should try to be…” or “You need to work on becoming…”He says, “You are!”It’s not a suggestion. It’s your identity.

Luke 14 closes with these words:"Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, it is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."

Yes, the path of following Jesus is full of challenges and difficulties. But Jesus has shown us through His life that we are not walking this road alone. The Holy Spirit is with us every step of the way, giving us the grace and strength we need to fulfill what He has called us to do.

When you walk with God, when you learn to work alongside Him,your life will become abundant and rich beyond what you can imagine.

So, remember who you are:You are a noble messenger, a servant of the Most High God.You have already been given this honored identity. Now, accept His invitation, and become part of His victorious army!

Thank you for listening.Tomorrow, we will continue with Luke Chapter 15.May God bless you all!
