Dear brothers and sisters, peace be with you.
Today, we continue reading Luke 11:14–36. This passage records another story of Jesus casting out a demon, and in this section, Jesus also tells an important story about an unclean spirit returning to a person. Let’s take a look at the insights this passage gives us.
This is the story of Jesus casting out a demon that made a man mute. After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke. But surprisingly, some people were not happy about this. Some, possibly out of jealousy, seeing the miracle Jesus performed, accused Him, saying: “He must be casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons.”
In some folk beliefs, there are also similar sayings — as if one could use a stronger demon to drive out weaker demons. But here, Jesus gave a very important revelation. He said, “If I drive out demons by the prince of demons, then wouldn’t Satan’s kingdom be divided and fighting against itself?”
This statement has two profound meanings:
First, if a nation is divided against itself, it cannot stand. If Satan’s kingdom fights against itself, that kingdom will surely collapse.
Second, Jesus asked them in return: “If I cast out demons by Beelzebub, then by whom do your sons drive them out?” In other words, He made these accusers reflect on their own logic and realize whether it made sense or not.
The most remarkable thing about Jesus is that He used such clear, flawless logic to make those who tried to challenge Him speechless.
This is also a reminder for us — when people question our faith, we don’t need to argue harshly. Instead, we can calmly point out the errors in their logic with the clarity of God’s truth. The logic of the Bible is perfect and unbreakable. When we understand this, we will be confident, knowing that the truth will always stand and cannot be defeated.
In verse 24, Jesus tells a story: after an unclean spirit leaves a person, it wanders in arid places. Later, it returns to the person’s heart and finds that the place has been cleaned and put in order. So, it goes and brings along seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first.
We all know that bad habits cannot be eliminated simply by trying to stop them; they can only be replaced by good habits. For example, if every day you think, “I don’t want to smoke, I don’t want to smoke,” all you’re really focusing on is smoking. The more you think about it, the harder it becomes to quit.
On the other hand, if every time you want to smoke, you tell yourself, “I’ll go exercise for five minutes,” then gradually, the good habit of exercise will replace the bad habit of smoking.
What Jesus teaches here is exactly the same principle: when you cast out a bad habit, your heart cannot remain empty. You must fill it with something good. You must fill your heart with the Word of God, be filled with the Holy Spirit, and let God’s grace replace that empty space.
If you leave yourself in a spiritual vacuum, eventually that bad habit — that unclean spirit — will return, and it will bring even more bad things with it.
So in the Christian life, there is no such thing as “standing still.” We must continuously grow, learn, and fill our hearts with God’s Word and truth. Only by continually allowing ourselves to be filled with the Holy Spirit and truth can we remain in a state of victory.
As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” She meant, “Your mother is so blessed to have given birth to and raised a son like You.”
But Jesus replied with a profound truth: “Blessed rather are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.”
This statement teaches us something very important — that those who are truly blessed are not so because of their birth, but because they “hear the Word of God and put it into practice.”
“Hear” means continually listening to God’s Word.“Obey” means living it out and making it part of daily life.
Jesus teaches us that a person who is willing to live out God’s Word in their life is even more blessed than Mary, who was His earthly mother.
This reminds us that the focus of the Christian life is whether you are willing to change your life and replace past bad habits with a God-centered lifestyle. When we make the decision to live a holy, godly life with God at the center, that is when we are truly blessed.
Next, Jesus gives another important warning:
Many people say, “I will believe if I see miracles.”But Jesus emphasizes this: “The Son of Man Himself is the sign for this generation.”
What does this mean?It means that when you understand that the cross is the greatest sign and when you come to know the gospel of Jesus Christ, you have already seen the greatest miracle.
Verse 31 says, “The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom.”In other words, even the Queen of Sheba was willing to pay the price to seek wisdom. And yet, when you hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and do not repent or accept it, that becomes your sin.
Healing the sick, casting out demons, making the lame walk and the blind see — these are miracles, yes. But the greatest miracle is when a soul repents after hearing the name of Jesus Christ and turns to God. That is the miracle God values the most.
Jesus continues by saying, “The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah.”
Do you see? Repentance, turning back to God, and turning to Jesus — that is the real miracle. It is more important than any outward miracle that can be performed in the flesh.
We must not turn Christianity into a religion that just seeks magic-like signs and wonders. When we see a sinner repent and turn back to God, that is the clearest evidence of the Holy Spirit at work. Because without the work of the Holy Spirit, none of us could truly believe in Jesus.
In Luke 15, we will read that Jesus says when one sinner repents, the angels in heaven rejoice over that one soul.
Spiritual Reflection for Today:
Jesus said that the blessing of His mother Mary — who bore Him and nursed Him — is not as great as the blessing of those who hear God’s Word and obey it.Being able to know God and repent to Jesus is itself the greatest miracle.
May we all come to understand what true blessing is!
Thank you for listening. Tomorrow, we will continue to share the final part of chapter 11, regarding the Pharisees and the background of the oral laws.May God bless you all.
