Cornelius Calls for Peter

At Caesarea, there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment. He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly. One day at about three in the afternoon, he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”

Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked.

The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants. He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.

Peter’s Vision

About noon the following day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds. Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

“Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”

The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”

This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

Peace be with you, brothers and sisters. Today, we are reading Acts chapter 10, which is a complete story. Due to its length, we will divide it into three days for explanation. These three parts are closely related and highlight important points. Let’s begin by reading this entire chapter carefully, as it is significantly related to the salvation of Gentiles. For the Jews and the entire world, this chapter records extremely important events.

From the beginning, we hear about a man named Cornelius, an Italian centurion. He was a leader in the formal army, equivalent to a modern-day company commander. They were important members of the military, responsible for managing soldiers and reporting to higher officers. They usually fought on the front lines and held key positions.

Cornelius was unique. In a country where the mainstream faith was polytheism, inherited from Greek gods, Cornelius chose monotheism. He and his entire household feared God, gave alms generously, and prayed constantly. Although he didn’t fully understand the Jewish God, he longed to learn more about this faith. We see that God opens the door of faith for such individuals. Previously, we saw that an Ethiopian eunuch, a Gentile, was eager to know God, and God sent Philip to speak to him. Today, because this centurion longed for God, He sent the apostle Peter to speak to him.

Next, we see Peter. Peter was staying in the house of Simon the tanner. After experiencing many miracles, Peter's thoughts also changed. Traditionally, Jews had many rules: they couldn’t touch corpses, couldn’t interact with the dead, and couldn’t associate with Gentiles. At this time, Peter was staying in the house of a tanner. What is a tanner? He is someone who processes animal hides, naturally dealing with corpses. Peter’s willingness to stay with this man already indicated he had partially broken free from past restrictions. But he still didn’t fully understand, so let’s continue.

God showed Peter a vision of various animals, birds, and insects. God commanded him to kill and eat. Peter refused, saying, “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” God’s response was, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” This happened three times, and then the sheet was taken back to heaven.

Peter strictly adhered to Jewish traditions, which were deeply ingrained in him. For Jews, the laws regarding cleanliness and uncleanliness were very important. He couldn’t let go of his ingrained thoughts. Often, when we encounter new things, the biggest obstacles come from within, from our habits and thoughts. When we learn new things, understand trends, and keep up with changes, our ingrained thoughts often hold us back. It might be the advice of elders, societal pressure, or an unwillingness to learn and improve that makes our thoughts rigid and stubborn. As a result, our minds age. Aging is not about the body but about the mind’s inability to learn and renew.

Later, we will see that Paul, who was once a more rigorous Jew, strictly observing the laws and regulations, became the one to spread the gospel to the Gentiles. During his process of transformation, he not only changed his knowledge but also his understanding of traditions, completely altering his thought system. This is a significant challenge for a person. Christianity is harder for adults to accept often because our deeply ingrained thoughts hinder us from accepting the gospel. This is why people are more receptive to the gospel when they undergo major upheavals and their thought systems are shattered or collapsed. We can say that the greatest enemy of our faith has always been ourselves.

May we all have lively, open minds. Before criticizing new thoughts, trends, or perspectives, may we have the wisdom of the Bible to discern and understand, while maintaining a heart open to following the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for listening, and we will continue with the second part of the story tomorrow.
